Wind Measurement

We provide our services using RSDs (Sodar and Lidar), and Met Mast equipment

Since 2010, we have executed numerous wind measurement projects. Our projects have primarily been located in Finland, but we have also constructed wind measurement masts in Sweden. Additionally, we have been responsible for maintaining sodars in the project.

In Finland, we have installed wind measurement devices inland, on the open fells of northern Lapland, and on coastal islands in the open sea.

Our top priorities in wind measurement projects are reliable system installation, well-executed maintenance, and thorough documentation. This ensures high-quality wind data for our clients. Our mast measurements adhere to the IEC 61400-12:2017 Ed 2.0 standards.

Lidar

Technical specifications:

Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and create detailed, three dimensional maps of the environment. In the context of wind energy, Lidars play a crucial role in assessing wind conditions for wind farms.

ZX Lidars, a leading company in the field, manufactures Lidars specifically designed for arctic conditions. Their product lineup includes the high-quality ZX300 M Offshore Wind Lidar for offshore measurements.

WindCube® The industry-standard vertical profiling lidar for accurate, bankable wind data — offshore and onshore. Technology stands out as a highly adaptable and precise solution for wind measurement. It caters to both onshore and offshore projects, making it suitable for a wide range of turbine types. Additionally, WindCube® supports continuous measurement campaigns across all project phases

  • Measurement Height: up to 300 meters
  • Hybrid Energy System: Combining solar panels and a diesel generator (with an electricity supply container)

For Lidars we provides the following services:

  • Transportation, Installation, and Commissioning
  • Maintenance
  • Monitoring and Support
  • Troubleshooting
  • Equipment and Spare Parts Sales
  • Calibration and Verification Deliveries

Met Mast

Technical specifications:

We sell and rent turnkey wind measurement systems. The masts we use are lattice steel
masts ranging from 20 to 160 meters in height. We are even capable of delivering masts
as tall as 200 meters.

Mast Delivery Includes:

  • Foundations
  • Obstruction lighting system
  • Red and white safety coloring
  • Guy wires and fastenings
  • Climbing profile
  • Climbing safety measures
  • Boom system for weather measurements

According to customer requirements, we provide the best and highest-quality sensors and measuring devices suitable for arctic conditions:

  • Anemometers
  • Wind vanes
  • Ultrasonic anemometers
  • Humidity, temperature, and pressure sensors, as well as weather stations

The measuring instruments we use are top-of-the-line, manufactured by companies such as Thies Clima, Vaisala, NRG, Galltec, and Ammonit.

For mast measurements, we utilize Ammonit Meteo-40 series data loggers. Once the system is ready, we ensure the transmission of raw data to the customer and take care of energy system maintenance and monitoring.

Here’s how a wind measurement project progresses with us:

INITIATION

Define and inspect the site conditions.
Plan the wind measurement and energy system.
Create work and safety plans.
Set project schedules.

CALIBRATION OF MEASURING DEVICES:

Calibrate weather measurement devices before starting measurements.

SITE PREPARATION:

Obtain necessary building permits and other approvals.
Perform groundwork for installing measuring devices.

INSTALLATION:

Deliver measuring devices and systems to the site.
Install the equipment.
Commission the system.
Provide a report on the completed installation to the client.

MAINTENANCE AND MONITORING:

Monitor the operation of measurement and energy systems.
Conduct regular maintenance.
Report events and maintenance visits to the client.

MEASUREMENT DATA:

Automatically collect and back up measurement data on our server.
Monitor the quality of measurement data.
Share measurement data with the client.

CONCLUSION OF MEASUREMENTS:

After the project ends, dismantle and remove the measuring devices from
the site.

Clean up the area.
If needed, perform post-calibration for the measurement sensors.
Provide a final report to the client.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do you rent out measuring devices?

Hafmex rents out AQSystem’s AQ500 and AQ510 Wind Finder Sodars, as well as ZX
Lidar’s ZX300 Onshore and ZX300M Offshore Lidars. For measuring masts, we primarily
use sensors from Vaisala, Thies, and NRG, along with Ammonit data loggers.

Do you install customer-owned equipment?

Regarding customer-owned equipment, yes, we install, maintain, and repair customerowned measuring devices and systems. These include Sodars, Lidars, measuring masts,
and power supply systems.

For example, when it comes to Lidars, our installation process adheres to the following
standards and guidelines:
IEC 61400-50-2 Ed.1 (2022): Wind measurement – Application of ground-mounted
remote sensing technology.
IEA Wind RP 15: Ground-Based, Vertically-Profiling Remote Sensing for Wind
Resource Assessment (2013).
MEASNET Evaluation of site-specific wind conditions, V3 (2022).
Manufacturer’s guidelines: Windcube V2.1 User manual (Vaisala 2022).

Hafmex has extensive experience in operating remote sensing wind measurement devices
since 2010. Additionally, we are a Vaisala L1 certified lidar operator.

Are the measuring devices provided by Hafmex calibrated?

As for calibration, all measuring devices supplied by Hafmex are calibrated. We perform calibrations either with the device manufacturers or at accredited calibration facilities. The calibration certificate is provided along with the measuring device.

What kind of warranty do Hafmex’s supplied measuring devices have?

For the equipment we supply, there is a 12-month material warranty for newly delivered
measuring devices and systems.

Does Hafmex provide power supply systems?

Regarding power supply systems, we rent, sell, and maintain portable hybrid systems
primarily for electrifying weather measurement stations in locations without access to the
power grid. These systems typically combine solar panels and diesel generators. Remote
monitoring and control are managed via remote connections. We also have experience
with fuel cell systems such as EFOY, and we have the capacity to monitor and perform
routine maintenance for these systems.

How long does the measurement campaign last?

Generally, we recommend wind measurements lasting at least 12 months, preferably even
longer. This allows us to assess wind patterns throughout different seasons.

When does it get windiest?

Windiness varies between seasons and years. Over the long term, wind intensity is
strongest during the autumn and winter months.
